Mission and goal

Spirituality and Mind

Mission

Humans are fundamentally spiritual beings, making spirituality essential to overall health. Supporting those in spiritual distress is vital as it enhances emotional, physical, and mental well-being and, thus, sustainable health behavior change, significantly improving quality of life. Addressing spiritual health is crucial for fostering resilience and healing in wellness and illness.

Goal

Harnessing the power of spirituality as a transformative tool to elevate individuals’ emotional, physical, and mental well-being for sustained health behavior.

The path of self-inquiry to Health Behavior change

Spiritual Alignment

The Path of Self-Inquiry: Who Are We?

When life brings suffering—through illness, grief, or the loss of purpose—a quiet question rises from within:

“Who am I?”

This is not just a philosophical question. It is a spiritual compass.

Self-Inquiry begins where the ego ends—
When identities tied to job, health, or success fall apart,
we begin to ask deeper questions not from the mind, but from the soul.

Across traditions, the call is the same:

  • Christianity: “The Kingdom of God is within you.”
  • Sufism: “Die before you die.”
  • Buddhism: “Know the self, and you will know freedom.”
  • Hinduism (Advaita): “Tat Tvam Asi” — You are That.

Self-Inquiry leads to:

  • Clarity beyond chaos
  • Compassion toward oneself and others
  • Peace that no illness can steal
  • Purpose anchored in the eternal Self

Spirituality and Health Behavior Change

Spirituality and Behavior Link

  • Spirituality can significantly influence behavior change by providing individuals with a sense of purpose, meaning, and moral compass.

  • It often leads to positive actions like adopting healthier habits, increased compassion, and a greater commitment to personal growth, especially when connected to practices like meditation, prayer, or connecting with a community of faith.

  •  Spirituality can motivate individuals to change their behavior by offering a deeper understanding of themselves and their place in the world, encouraging more intentional choices.

Spiritual Care Driving Sustainable Health Behavior Change

Health Behavior Change

  • Why is it difficult to maintain health behavior changes? What role does spiritual awareness play in sustaining these changes?

  • We can address this issue by developing a sustainable health behavior change model for the community, incorporating spiritual literacy and self-awareness to transform internal urges, and fostering a sense of purpose in life.

Collaboration between Health Coach and Spiritual Care Provider

Patient, Health Coach, & Spiritual Care Provider Partnership Model

  • This unique model will exploit the patient's spiritual belief-based intrinsic motivation to enhance the health behavior change journey and ensure success.

  • An insurance company or healthcare provider may refer a patient to a health coach to identify barriers to health behavior change and set goals.

  • A health coach might refer a client to a spiritual care provider (chaplain) when the client is experiencing significant emotional or spiritual distress related to their health situation.

  •  This is critical when a client is dealing with a serious diagnosis, grief, existential questions, or a need for support beyond the scope of the coach's expertise, allowing the chaplain to provide specialized spiritual guidance and support.
