Frequently Asked Questions health coaching healthy lifestyle healthy living

Please reach us at awareonc@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being. Health is determined by many factors, including biological, environmental, and socioeconomic factors.

Wellness comprises of eight mutually co-dependence dimensions: emotional, physical, occupational, social, spiritual, intellectual, environmental, and financial. If any one of these dimensions is neglected over time, it will adversely affect one's health, well-being, and quality of life.

A health coach is a trained professional who helps people improve their health and well-being. They work with clients to develop healthy habits and lifestyle changes.

  • Provide advice on nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle
  • Help clients set goals and track progress
  • Help clients identify and overcome obstacles
  • Help clients build coping and problem-solving skills
  • Help clients manage chronic conditions
  • Help clients reduce stress and improve sleep
  • Help clients quit smoking or manage addiction

People may consult a health coach to help them lose weight, reduce stress, or manage chronic conditions. They may also be partnered with a physician or provided by an insurance company.

  • In clinics
  • In corporate wellness programs
  • In private practice
  • In medical offices
  • In integrative medicine practices
  • In hospitals
  • In universities
  • In insurance companies

Health coaches help people change their habits and mindset, while personal trainers create exercise programs.

Spirituality is a personal practice that involves seeking meaning and connection with a higher power, others, or the universe. It can include meditation, prayer, mindfulness, and other practices.

Spirituality can help people find purpose and meaning in life. It can also help people connect with a force greater than themselves and with other people.

  • Compassion: Feeling empathy for others and helping those in need
  • Connection: Deepening connections with others and feeling a sense of interconnectedness
  • Wonder: Experiencing feelings of awe and wonder
  • Questioning: Asking deep questions about life, suffering, and what happens after death

  • Meditation
  • Mindfulness
  • Yoga
  • Dance
  • Creating art or music
  • Spending time in nature
  • Breathwork

While both spirituality and religion involve a search for meaning and connection to something greater than oneself, the key difference lies in that religion is typically structured with established beliefs, practices, and institutions, while spirituality is a more personal and individual journey focused on inner connection and meaning-making, often without the need for a formal religious framework; essentially, religion is "organized" while spirituality is "inner-focused" and flexible.

Research suggests a strong positive correlation between spirituality and healthy behaviors, with individuals who actively practice spirituality often exhibiting better health outcomes by engaging in activities like regular exercise, healthy eating, and abstaining from substance abuse, as their spiritual beliefs can provide a sense of purpose, hope, and coping mechanisms to manage stress and challenges, thereby promoting overall well-being;. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Key points about spirituality and health behavior: [2, 3, 4]

  • Positive impact on coping: Spirituality can act as a powerful coping mechanism during difficult times like illness, providing comfort and strength to navigate challenging situations;. [2, 3, 4]
  • Reduced stress and anxiety: Engaging in spiritual practices like prayer or meditation can help lower stress and anxiety levels, contributing to better mental health;. [1, 2, 6]
  • Promotes healthy habits: Individuals with strong spiritual beliefs may be more likely to adopt healthy lifestyle choices like regular exercise and a balanced diet due to a focus on self-care and overall well-being. [1, 3, 4]
  • Sense of community: Participating in religious communities can provide social support and a sense of belonging, which can positively influence health behaviors. [1, 3, 4]
  • Improved quality of life: Studies indicate that strong spiritual beliefs can lead to a higher perceived quality of life and greater overall happiness. [1, 3, 5]

However, it's important to note: [1, 3, 7]

  • Individual variations: The relationship between spirituality and health behaviors can vary depending on individual beliefs and practices, and not everyone experiences the same positive effects. [1, 3, 7]
  • Negative aspects: In some cases, unhealthy coping mechanisms like blaming oneself for illness or neglecting medical treatment based on religious beliefs can arise. [7, 8]
